Last week, during an online meeting, my colleague Arash posed a profound question: "Sara, I know this topic is important to you, but what exactly was the turning point that drew you so deeply to the connection between language and thought?"

The root of this fascination was a long-standing intellectual conflict. For years, 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 served as my primary tool for contemplation and analysis. I always had an intuitive sense that extensive reading and writing played a pivotal role in shaping my decisions and worldview. However, as a professional, this remained a subjective intuition—not a scientific reality I could explain or implement within an organization or a research group.

This gap led me to initiate a 12-month self-study. My goal was to test key psychological theories—specifically the works of 𝗟𝗲𝘃 𝗩𝘆𝗴𝗼𝘁𝘀𝗸𝘆—on my own professional life to discover an operational roadmap for how language activates our capacity for creativity and strategic decision-making.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆

The foundation of my experiment rests on Vygotsky’s central premise: 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (such as voluntary memory and logical reasoning) are developed through psychological tools like language and writing. Writing is not merely a medium for communication; it is an 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 that reorganizes the very structure of our minds.

My operational model employs written tools in three sequential steps to achieve 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:

𝟯. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗢𝗻𝗲: 𝗖𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

In this phase, writing transitioned from a casual activity to a "psychological tool."

.𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀: By externalizing mental chaos onto paper, "Attention" is separated from internal noise. This readies the brain for high-level processing.

.𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹: This practice reduces 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱. Leaders who master this ensure that strategic decisions are not clouded by emotional turbulence or the trivialities of daily operations.

𝟰. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗧𝘄𝗼: 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲")

I established a strict rule: read sections from four opposing sources (e.g., Philosophy, Psychology, Literature, and Management) and immediately follow it with synthesis-focused writing. I forced myself to extract a "𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲" from the contradictions.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀: The compulsion to combine unrelated concepts expanded my 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗭𝗣𝗗). Here, complex texts acted as the "More Knowledgeable Other," elevating my thinking from an everyday level to a systemic one.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹: This is the bedrock of 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. Leaders must challenge opposing viewpoints (technical vs. financial vs. market) and oblige their teams to find the "staircase" that connects them.

𝟱. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲: 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁

The tangible results of this model came to fruition in my work with children at risk for learning disabilities. I observed how language serves as an instrument for behavioral control and creativity.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: When a child embodies a concept like "honesty" through story and drawing, they are developing higher mental functions.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹: Organizations require 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. A lack of precise vocabulary destroys a team’s capacity for self-regulation and complex problem-solving.

𝟲. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆

My 12-month study proved that professional development is not a random occurrence; it is an organized, deliberate process:

𝟭.𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱: To minimize cognitive load.

𝟮.𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀: To drive systemic innovation.

𝟯.𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: To ensure the internalization of new capabilities.

By organizing your higher cognitive functions, you ensure that strategic thinking is always built upon a foundation of effective self-regulation.
